Mighty Pixel Productions: Start Small – Ten Ways To a Greener Company

18 02 2009

A special guest by Michelle Galley of Mighty Pixel Productions.

I applaud each and every company and person that makes an effort to “Go Green“. I personally feel that if you contribute in any way, you are helping out! I also believe that there are a lot of companies who don’t realize the little things do help. I have compiled a list of ten ways that almost every company can contribute to, by making these small but significant changes.

Support green communities online. It is a great way to market your company as well as getting involved. Join associations or charities. Some of my favourites…

Design Can Change
Green Energy Act
Ontario Environmental Directory

Every business that needs to market their company should be in a trade show. Instead of printed handouts for people visiting your booth, why not bring your laptop. And have a PowerPoint presentation or video to show visitors more about your company. It is also a professional, modern way to showcase your company. And who doesn’t enjoy a good video?!

It truly is the computer era, take advantage of this and market online. Instead of mailers, create a web banner advertisement or animated podcast and try to get them linked and showcased on as many websites as possible.

Let’s face it, we all can do a bit more in our personal lives, after all we are only human! Recycle, re-use, buy smarter. Ask yourself when buying something new “What is a better option for the environment”. Simple changes like:

♦ turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth
♦ shutting down your power sucking machines and gadgets (don’t forget to unplug or turn off the     power bar).
♦ get e-bills instead of mailed bills.

Not all companies charge an arm and a leg for environmentally friendly printed material. Try Green Printer.

Everyone really should have a solid business plan, Add new guidelines to that business plan on what your companies green practices are and enforce it with your employees. Why not add a simple and easy way to encourage your staff to participate in your practices with a simple prize or recognition (“recycler of the month”) for the most green friendly employee.

I know this one is pretty obvious. But I believe it deserves its own category. If you must print, Please spend the extra few dollars and invest in recycled paper.

Send your clients invoicing or correspondence online. Use email for inter office memos (TPS reports anyone?).

Instead of flying clients or employees in or out, get one of the numerous video conferencing services, some are free, some are not. Most office telephones today have a conference capability. If your employees must travel, can they take a train? If car rental is needed why not opt for an eco-friendly rental car, most car rental companies carry them.

This category is a three for one deal, nothing but goodness. Buy Ontario grown food. You will be supporting our local economy as well as being green savvy and cutting down emissions from food being transported into Canada. You will also be making a healthier choice. Buying locally you cut down on pesticides that are used on the food (Canada’s regulations are different) and less preservatives have to be added to the food to make it able to withstand those long truck trips.

We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources.OPEC will continue to cut production until they achieve their desired 80-100. per barrel. The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. Oil is finite. We are using oil globally at the rate of 2X faster than new oil is being discovered. We need to take some of these billions in bail out bucks and bail ourselves out of our dependence on foreign oil. Jeff Wilson has a really good new book out called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence Now. He explores our uses of oil besides gasoline, our depletion, out reserves and stores as well as viable options to replace oil.Oil is finite, it will run out in the not too distant future. WE need to take some of these billions in bail out bucks and bail America out of it’s dependence on foreign oil. The historic high price of gas this past year did serious damage to our economy and society. WE should never allow others to have that much power over our economy again.
