Going green makes good business sense

Business Examiner

For a man who makes his living in the printing industry, Alen Rokolj might not have wanted to know how many trees his former company was responsible for cutting down.

But a few years ago, Rokolj and his business partner Brian Schindel calculated just that – and were shocked by the figures they came up with.

"We discovered that for a shop around our size... [the number of trees] was over 5,000 a year," he says.

Be green or be gone

Green Living - Pamela Groberman

I'm the poster girl for green. When I ordered 800 posters for my client, the Danish Way of Living exhibition in Gastown, I knew they had better be green, or I'd be gone. THe exhibition features the designs of Denmark's 3XN, a world leader in sustainable architecture, now making a name in Canada.

The posters were produced by Green Printer a company dedicated to affordable, environmentally friendly printing. An online ceo calculator shows you the impact of your order.

Green printing methods eliminate waste by using vegetable-hased, non-toxic inks and energy-efficient processes. The report card on my order is in - and I'm delighted with the results

  • 0.33 trees preserved for the future.
  • 0.96 lbs of water-borne waste not created.
  • 141.9 gallons of waste-water flow saved.
  • 15.73 Ibs of solid waste not generated.
  • 30.90 Ihs of greenhouse gasses prevented.
  • 237,000 BTUs of energy not consumed.

"When we explain to our clients that they can make a difference, they are very receptive. Now they ask us not only what the job costs, but how many trees can be saved. I'm so happy with the response from my customers, there is a willingness in this community to make a change."

The Danish Way of living exhibition is at the former Storyeum site until Dec.15. Posters point the way.

What makes Green Printer a green printer?

Since July, Green Printer has saved 3,750 trees from being turned into paper and avoided the following energy use and emissions:

  • Saved 1,545,410 gallons of water
  • Avoided producing 171,400 pounds of solid waste
  • Avoided emitting 336,270 pounds of CO2
  • Avoided using 2.57 billion BTUs of energy

"About 2 years ago, Alen and I were sitting at Starbucks, and I said, “Let’s just do the green thing. I think there’s a market for it.” There were no real models, nothing to look at. People weren’t prepared to take the steps we were prepared to take. The decision was made: if we’re going green, we’re going green!"

"...We really came at it from two different directions. Brian wanted to save trees and protect the environment and I wanted to implement process improvement and automation to eliminate waste. We run an eco-friendly business, but first and foremost we run a business. When you make things more efficient, one of the benefits is that you are being more eco-friendly because you have far less waste."
